Lawyers for President-elect Donald Trump have moved to block the vote Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein’s recount in Pennsylvania. Politico reports Trump’s legal team filed a complaint Thursday stating:
Despite being no more than a blip on the electoral radar, Stein has now commandeered Pennsylvania’s electoral process, with an eye toward doing the same to the Electoral College. There is no evidence — or even an allegation — that any tampering with Pennsylvania’s voting systems actually occurred.
The Pennsylvania filing followed shortly Trump’s complaint submitted earlier Thursday in Michigan seeking to block Stein’s recount there as well. According to Time, the Trump’s Michigan complaint dismissed Stein’s claims of impropriety during the 2016 presidential race and, Stein because received only 1% of the vote, argued that Stein was a “bottom-dwelling candidate,” that cannot seek the expensive, time-consuming recount because she was not “aggrieved” to the point where potential miscounting of votes could have cost her the election.
Michigan’s elections board on Friday will consider Trump’s request to block a hand recount of all 4.8 million ballots cast in the state he won by about 10,700 votes over Hillary Clinton.
Trump’s efforts to block recounts in Michigan and Pennsylvania came a day after the Wisconsin Republican Party moved to stop that state’s presidential recount by filing a complaint with the Federal Election Commission alleging that purpose of Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein’s recount is to help Hillary Clinton win.
Trump’s lawyers also said in their Michigan complaint that Stein waited until the last minute to file her recount petition, making it impossible to finish by a Dec. 13 deadline. We reported previously how a federal “safe harbor” law requires states to complete presidential recounts within 35 days of the election to ensure their electoral votes are counted. The presidential recounts in all three states could put a state at risk of not having its 10 electoral votes counted. A federal “safe harbor” law requires states to complete presidential recounts within 35 days of the election to ensure their electoral votes are counted.
No reasonable person expects these presidential to change the outcome in any of the states. Many say Stein is a little-known candidate who is merely trying to raise her profile by raising millions of dollars with her frivolous recounts which are costing taxpayers millions.
