Chicago Facebook Torture Video Perpetrators Charged With Multiple Felonies, Hate Crime

vlcsnap-2017-01-05-13h56m02s275-e1483642646483-650x427The four young adults who filmed themselves binding and torturing a mentally handicapped man while yelling “F*** Donald Trump” and “F*** white people” have been charged with a slew of felonies, including the commission of a hate crime.

Jordan Hill, Tesfaye CooperBrittany Covington, and Tanishia Covington were all arrested Wednesday. Police initially declined to comment on whether or not they planned to charge the four with hate crimes, saying that they would let the investigation play itself out first

WARNING: Video is extremely disturbing.

All four were charged with aggravated kidnapping, hate crimes, aggravated unlawful restraint and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Three of the four were also charged with residential burglary, while Hill was also charged with robbery.

It isn’t immediately clear whether the hate crime charge is specifically tied to the victim’s race: mental disability is also a protected category in Chicago. The past 24 hours have seen a spirited debate about whether hate crime charges should be filed based on the victim’s race, with some arguing that they should not.
