As you might expect, there’s been a strong conservative backlash to Meryl Streep‘s Golden Globes speech on Sunday night, in which she strongly criticized President-elect Donald Trump without naming him. But the newly-minted Cecil B. DeMille award winner also upset another constituency in her speech: mixed martial arts fans.
Followers of the sport took umbrage with a line in Streep’s address which they felt was a dig.
“Hollywood is crawling with foreigners,” Streep said. “So if you kick them all out you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts.”
MMA fans and fighters took to Twitter to express their outrage.
Fuck Meryl Streep. Talks shit about MMA then says "disrespect begets disrespect". Typical hypocritical Hollywood liberal.

You lost me at mixed martial arts, Meryl. Not cool.

Really weird to see someone talk about not discriminating then basically discriminate against an entire group of skilled, hard working ppl.

The biggest irony ever: Streep lecturing about bullying while bullying people who like "football and MMA." #GoldenGlobes

Meryl Streep is a brilliant actress and I get the point she was making. But I'd still watch Bellator prelims over "The Devil Wears Prada."

Meryl Streep how ignorant are u. In your speech you stated "Disrespect invites disrespect" yet you ignorantly disrespected an entire sport.

why did streep slam MMA? that seems gratuitous

But perhaps Streep will soon be converted to the sport. Scott Coker, the president of Bellator — Viacom’s MMA promotional outfit — invited Streep to an upcoming fight card.
