Last night during her Golden Globes speech, Meryl Streep implored the “principled press to hold power to account. To call them on the carpet for every outrage.” Then, she called on the “famously well-heeled Hollywood Foreign Press and all of us in our community to join me in supporting the Committee to Protect Journalists, because we’re gonna need them going forward, and they’ll need us to safeguard the truth.”
As it turns out, when Meryl Streep talks, people listen. According to a report from Time, the Committee to Protect Journalists saw a huge spike in donations last night, to the tune of 140 times the number of donations on a regular Sunday Night. Courtney Radsch, the advocacy director for the group told Time that while they normally get around 5 donations per night on Sundays, last night they got about 700.
The CPJ’s issues with President-Elect Donald Trump is nothing new. Trump has repeatedly attacked the press, and back in October, they released a statement that said a “Trump Presidency would represent a threat to press freedom in the United States.” They also warned that “the consequences for the rights of journalists around the world could be far more serious. Any failure of the United States to uphold its own standards emboldens dictators and despots to restrict the media in their own countries.”
Last night’s awards show was seen by 20 million people, so if the Committee to Protect Journalists wasn’t already on lots of people’s radars, it’s safe to say it is now. For more info and to donate, head over to their website.
