More than a week after Los Angeles residents were greeted on New Year’s Day with the iconic Hollywood sign being changed to read something entirely different, a man has been arrested and charged for conducting the prank.
Zachary Cole Fernandez, a 30-year-old artist, turned himself in on Monday and was booked with suspicion of misdemeanor trespassing for using tarps to make the sign appear as ‘HOLLYWeeD’.
Fernandez had already told VICE Magazine he had pulled the prank, which was a repeat of one done in the 1970s, as a way to bring “positivity to the world.” Police had not confirmed his involvement at that time, though.
Surveillance footage showed Fernandez, dressed in black, pulling off the prank on early New Year’s Day.
Fernandez was released on his own recognizance and will have to return to court next month.
