Steve Bannon, the controversial former Breitbart News chief turned White House strategist, has been removed from President Donald Trump‘s National Security Council. Bloomberg reports that National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster was responsible for the demotion, which had long been speculated to be a demand of his for taking the job after Michael Flynn’s resignation. NBC News confirmed the report, adding that Bannon had originally been placed on the council as a “check” to Flynn:

BREAKING: Bannon's role on NSC had been as a "check on Mike Flynn," per top aide, which is no longer needed with McMaster replacing Flynn.

The controversial appointment grew even more suspicious when it was reported that Trump signed the executive order giving Bannon his NSA position without being aware that he was doing so.
This is a developing story, and will be updated accordingly.
