Eric Trump had a straightforward moment months ago when he talked about how giving preferential treatment to favored individuals is an unavoidable reality of the world.
Eric and his older brother Donald Trump Jr. were given control over the family’s business empire after their father was sworn in as president. On Tuesday, Forbes published an interview they had with the Trump scion back in February, where he was asked about professional development and his inheritance of the seat at the top of the Trump Organization.
“Nepotism is kind of a factor of life,” Trump said. “We might be here because of nepotism, but we’re not still here because of nepotism. You know, if we didn’t do a good job, if we weren’t competent, believe me, we wouldn’t be in this spot.”
Trump went on to say that his father “expects people to perform” and they are used to seeing him lead people out of his orbit if they do not meet his expectations. The president has maintained a close relationship with his family members, and Eric Trump said that he kept his leading position after he and his siblings proved themselves to their father.
The Trump administration continues to field criticism from those who are concerned that Trump is using the White House to give perks and positions of power to his family and associates. Much of the current concern is gravitated around Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump‘s growing influence within the presidency.
