Only one day after a controversial new commercial debuted, the commercial’s sponsor, PepsiCo, Inc., has already shelved the ad because of massive backlash from liberal activist communities.
The ad, which features model Kendall Jenner, depicted Jenner leaving a photo shoot breaking what appeared to be a Black Lives Matter protest line to share a soda with a police officer. Pepsi said the commercial was supposed to depict unity and bringing the country together, but apologized Wednesday for offending some who didn’t appreciate the message.
“Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding,” the company said in a statement released on their website. “Clearly we missed the mark and we apologize. We did not intend to make light of any serious issue. We also apologize for putting Kendall Jenner in this position.”
Originally, the soda giant defended their ad, saying it was a necessary message, even if uncomfortable for some.
“This is a global ad that reflects people from different walks of life coming together in a spirit of harmony, and we think that’s an important message to convey,” Pepsi said.
The commercial set social media ablaze with reactions. Many people decried the ad as “tone deaf,” racist, and offensive to the Black Lives Matter movement. Some others made light of the commercial, joking, “[W]hat if all Kim Jong Un needs is a Pepsi?”
