Jason Chaffetz Expected to Announce Early Resignation from Congress

Chaffetz

Rep. Jason Chaffetz is expected to announce his upcoming resignation from Congress on Thursday, reportedly due for June 30, more than a year before the end of his term.

The Utah Republican announced in April that he was not seeking reelection in 2018, set to be a year fraught with pitfalls for GOP congressman struggling with an unpopular president and energized Democratic opposition.

The next day, Chaffetz suggested he may depart before the end of his term, and before long reports surfaced that the congressman is headed to Fox News, to join the cable network’s on-air talent.

Chaffetz is currently the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, and on Wednesday announced a hearing scheduled for next week in which former FBI director James Comey is invited to testify about memos he has of potentially illicit conversations with President Donald Trump.

The Utah congressman did not respond to Politico’s requests for comment, but his announcement is expected this afternoon.
