It’s the cardinal rule of boxing: Protect yourself at all times. But Willie Monroe Jr. had no idea that the rule applied to the weigh-in — and a seemingly innocent confrontation with his opponent’s young son.
At the weigh-in prior to Monroe’s middleweight bout against England’s Billie Joe Saunders, Monroe tousled the hair of Saunders’ son Stevie. The boy, though, was not there to have his hair tousled. He had more sinister intentions.
Stevie wound up, and unleashed a right hand shot to Monroe’s groin. Yes, the boy actually punched the boxer below the belt.
Monroe was furious about the incident — posting the following to Instagram:
I honestly thought people in London were cool but I've called a Nigger..a wanker…a Latin Fuck etc and now at the weigh ins They bring a kid on stage to punch me in the Nuts and nothing was done about it @frank_warren_official should be ashamed of himself #williemonroejr #SaundersMonroe #MonroeSaunders #Wewin. #badkids #coffinseason #andthenew #weighins
But Billy Joe Saunders made no apologies for his son’s behavior.
