Last week, three UCLA basketball players were arrested in China for shoplifting. President Donald Trump is now reportedly stepping in to try to resolve the case.
According to the Washington Post, Trump spoke to Chinese President Xi Jinping to try to bring closure to the situation. UCLA players LiAngelo Ball, Cody Riley, and Jalen Hill have been forced to remain in China as the rest of their team flew back to the U.S.
Ball is the brother of highly-touted L.A. Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball, and the son of LaVar Ball — who has become a household name due to his over-the-top promotion of his sons, specifically Lonzo. This past weekend on Saturday Night Live, LaVar, portrayed by Kenan Thompson, was mocked during Weekend Update.
According to an ESPN report, LaVar scrapped plans to hold a press conference on the matter due to concerns he could enflame the matter. He reportedly said that his son’s arrest was “not a big deal.
Trump, meanwhile, is trying to personally smooth things over. Xi, according to the Post, promised Trump he’d look into the matter, and make sure the players are treated — quoting from the article — “expeditiously and fairly.” White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed that Trump and Xi talked about the case.
