CNN’s New Day aired a montage of President Donald Trump’s “history of racially-tinged comments,” in light of recent reports the president derided Haiti, El Salvador and unspecified African countries as “shitholes” during an immigration meeting in the Oval Office.
The montage included such greatest hits as the president calling Mexicans “rapists,” demanding Obama’s birth certificate, calling neo-Nazis “very fine people,” amongst others.
“So today the question is being asked: is Trump a racist?” New Day host Alisyn Camerota posited, before bringing in New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow, who could not help but laugh at the question.
Blow argued that Trump’s “hostility towards people who are black and brown is one thing that he’s been consistent with his entire life.”
“That means that this is really who he is.”
The Washington Post dropped the gobsmacking report Thursday afternoon that claimed Trump referred to immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African nations as “people from shithole countries.” The president’s comment, which was reportedly made during an Oval Office meeting on the administration’s immigration policy, was corroborated by a number of other reports.
On CNN, Blow went on to note that Trump’s comments cannot be divorced from the policies he enacts as president.
“That meeting in which he said this was a meeting about policy,” Blow said. “There is no way to separate the racism coming out of his mouth with the intention of the policy!”
