Congressman Jim Renacci appeared on Fox & Friends Friday morning, and provided a…questionable defense of President Donald Trump’s reported, and derogatory, comments about people from certain countries.
Numerous outlets reported Thursday that Trump referred to immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African nations as “people from shithole countries” when bemoaning current immigration policies in the United States — and asked if the States could admit more people from Norway.
Renacci appeared on Fox & Friends Friday morning for an interview with host Brian Kilmeade who, to his credit, scolded the president for his reported comments earlier in the morning.
When Kilmeade asked Renacci about the remarks, the Ohio Republican offered a fairly limp defense for Trump.
“I’ve said all along the president many times says what people are thinking,” Renacci said. “I learned as a business guy you have to be careful what you say because people pick everything up.”
Renacci continued that Trump’s comments can be explained by his being “a business guy going into a political career.”
“I know it’s difficult for the president because many times you want to say what you are thinking but in the end, I know a lot of times he is saying what people are thinking,” he added.
The Ohio representative concluded that was should “judge the president after four years.”
“Let’s judge the president after what we’ve done — let’s not judge the president on what he says.” (A somewhat absurd request from the congressman, given that Trump’s reported “shithole” remark came during an immigration policy meeting in which the president was trying to halt immigrants from certain countries.)
Kilmeade ended the interview by noting that Renacci is running for Ohio Senate in 2018.
