Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) appeared on Face The Nation Sunday morning to face a grilling from CBS News’s John Dickerson over reports President Donald Trump referred to immigrants from African nations as “people from shithole countries.”
Dickerson first played comments from Sen. David Perdue (R-GA), who vehemently denied the president made the reported comments, and said lawmakers saying otherwise are touting “gross misrepresentations.”
Perdue had previously released a joint statement with Cotton claiming they “do not recall the President saying these comments.”
“John, I didn’t hear that word either,” Cotton told Dickerson. “I certainly didn’t hear what Senator Durbin has said repeatedly.”
Cotton then took a shot at the Democrat senator, claiming he “has history of misrepresenting what happens in White House meetings.”
Dickerson interjected, noting that Republican senators Lindsey Graham and Jeff Flake said the president made the remark.
“You’re saying it did not happen?” Dickerson pressed, “or you just don’t recall?”
“I didn’t hear it,” Cotton said. “And I was sitting no further away from Donald Trump than Dick Durbin was. I know what Dick Durbin has said about the president’s repeated statements is incorrect.”
“Was he lying?” Dickerson asked.
Cotton replied that Durbin had “misrepresented” what happened in a White House meeting under the Obama administration, and went on to argue for the current administration’s hardline immigration policy.
