Former New York Police Detective Tom Verni sounded off on CNN Wednesday night after the massacre that took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
Verni grimly predicted that “we’re going to be back here again” to talk about another tragedy in the near future based on how the country has reacted to previous massacres, including Sandy Hook.
“My litmus test was Sandy Hook. And when 20 first graders are slaughtered in their classroom including half a dozen teachers and absolutely nothing gets done- whether you’re talking about closing up loopholes or whether you’re talking about addressing, you know, mental illness in this country, which is still a taboo subject for a lot of people… and you always have the mix of the two,” Verni said. “So if nothing was done after that, I really just don’t know what the body count needs to be before people in Washington D.C. give a rat’s ass about the people in this country and their children. I mean, they have children and grandchildren of their own. Do they not care? It’s just infuriating to me that something, something is not done.”
Don Lemon pointed out that neither of his guests on the panel were “leftwing or rightwing partisans” and Verni pointed out that he and CNN Law Enforcement Analyst James A. Gagliano are gun owners.
