Parkland Mayor Responds to Trump on Shooting: If Solution Were Simple ‘We Would Have Found One Already’

President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Thursday to state that there were “many signs” that 19-year-old who carried out a mass shooting at a Florida high school on Wednesday was “mentally disturbed,” and urged people to “always report such instances to authorities, again and again!”

Nikolaus Cruz, a former student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, returned to the campus on Wednesday armed with an AR-15 to kill 17 people and wound more than a dozen others.

“So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior,” Trump tweeted the following morning. “Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again!”

Trump’s “see something say something” solution to this particular mass shooting comes after multiple reports on Cruz’s disturbing social media presence, as well as comments from his classmates that they were not surprised he carried out such an attack.

One former classmate told local news after the attack that Cruz frequently showed him photos of his guns, and even boasted about knowing the layout of the high school — echoing similar sentiments from other people that familiar with Cruz.

Parkland Mayor Christine Hunchofsky reacted to Trump’s tweet while appearing live on CNN, responding that “if a solution were simple for these things, we would have found one already.”
