Attorney General Jeff Sessions was already on thin ice with President Trump. Now, that ice may be about to crack.
Starting with Sessions’ announcement that he would recuse himself from any investigation having to do with the FBI’s probe into the Trump campaign’s alleged collusion with Russian actors, Trump has repeatedly slammed the nation’s top law enforcement officer as “beleaguered” and “weak.”
Such criticisms have sparked speculation as to how long Sessions might last in Trump’s cabinet.
And, in light of the firing of Veterans Affairs Secretary Shulkin earlier this week, many wondered who in the Trump administration could be the next to go.
On Thursday, Americans perhaps got a hint as to who the next head to roll could be.
Sessions announced Thursday that he will not seek to appoint a special counsel to investigate allegations of misconduct within the FBI, a topic Trump has frequently visited both on Twitter and while speaking publicly. A number of Republican lawmakers have called for a second special counsel, in addition to the Russia probe, to be appointed to investigate the bureau.
Sessions squashed any hope of that by saying that he will not appoint a special counsel but revealed that federal prosecutor John Huber of Utah is looking into the disturbing claims.
According to CNN, Sessions wrote:
I am confident that Mr. Huber’s review will include a full, complete and objective evaluation of these matters in a manner that is consistent with the law and facts,” Sessions wrote. “I receive regular updates from Mr. Huber and upon the conclusion of his review, will receive his recommendations as to whether any matters not currently under investigation should be opened, whether any matters currently under investigation require further resources, or whether any matters merit the appointment of a special counsel.
