America Unites to Support Former First Lady Barbara Bush

In today’s tumultuous political climate, it may sometimes seem as if there are few things that unite us as a country.

Earlier today, however, partisan divisions fell by the wayside after the office of George H.W. Bush released a statement that former First Lady Barbara Bush’s health is failing and that she will not seek further treatment.

In response, there was an outpouring of support for the former First Lady from both sides of the aisle:

In a time where political polarization appears to be the norm, and it’s hard to find bipartisan agreement for much of anything, it was encouraging to see politicians, activists, and journalists; Democrats and Republicans; and liberals and conservatives all come together to recognize Barbara Bush’s incredible legacy.

It speaks volumes about the kind of person Barbara Bush is.

Bush, 92, recently downplayed her medical situation to Smith College while affirming her love for her husband, who she married in 1945.

“I have had great medical care and more operations than you would believe. I’m not sure God will recognize me; I have so many new body parts!” Bush told Smith Alumnae Quarterly for its spring 2018 issue, published last month. She also wrote, “I am still old and still in love with the man I married 72 years ago.”

Here’s to hoping and praying for the best for Barbara Bush and the entire Bush family.
