There is, perhaps, no pairing of interviewer and interviewee in all of television which generates as much tension, every time out, as Chris Cuomo and Kellyanne Conway. The CNN anchor and the White House Counselor have battled a number of times during Donald Trump‘s presidency. All of the clashes have been fierce. Many have gone well past their alotted time.
And so it was Monday, when Conway appeared on New Day to discuss the blockbuster James Comey interview with Cuomo. In an utterly surreal sparring match which spanned nearly 30 minutes and extended far beyond New Day‘s regular broadcast window, Cuomo and Conway battled over the former FBI Director.
Conway took issue with the idea that Comey cost Hillary Clinton the election with his late-October public letter on the investigation into her emails.
“Christopher,” Conway said — scolding Cuomo not unlike a schoolmarm, “she was never at 50 percent in any of the polls in those swing states.”
“Certainly higher than Trump was,” Cuomo said, interjecting.
Conway did not take kindly to the interruption.
“Don’t just throw out sound bytes to go viral without letting me finish the sentence,” she said.
Later, the two clashed over the Russia probe — with Conway accusing Cuomo and CNN of wanting special counsel Robert Mueller to turn up evidence of collusion.
“You want this to be about something other than what the whole day is about here — which is whether or not this president has complied with an investigation that your network and others promised would lead to evidence of collusion between the campaign,” Conway said.
“We never promised anything like that, Kellyanne,” Cuomo said. “I don’t try to poison people’s minds like that. We need common ground, not division. Don’t poison people.”
